How to Pick a Jungler

How to Pick a Jungler

The picking phase is one of the most important phases of the game. There should be a few things going through your head at this point and a few questions you should be asking yourself, such as:

  1. What pick number am I?
  2. Am I able to swap champions with another teammate?
  3. How hard are the lanes going to be to gank?
  4. Do I know what champion is jungling on the other team?

1. What pick number am I
If you are an early pick you can think about how you want to play the game. Typically a good farming jungler will be a safe pick if you do not know who the enemy jungler is and/or who the enemy laners are. One reason a farmer is a good early pick is because if the enemy picks champions that have easy escapes it may turn out bad for you if you picked a gank reliant jungler.

2. Am I able to swap champions with another teammate?
If you are not one of the first couple picks then you should always try and swap champions with a teammate. The jungler is one the the most hard to counter picks in the game, provided that you are not picking a very gank dependent jungler, you should not have a problem if someone picks for you. An added bonus to this is that most people that play mid and top are willing to switch because they do not want to get counter-picked. Not only is this good for your team, but this is good for you, if you are one of the last picks and someone is willing to switch with you, typically your team will go along with it and you can secure your role as jungler even if you are the fourth of fifth pick.

3. How hard are the lanes going to be to gank?
This is a question that should weigh heavily every time you are fourth or fifth pick, but you should take this into account each game. If you do not know what you are going to be up against you should default to a farming jungler, this way you can focus on counter-jungling and be secure that you can control your own jungle due to your own sheer speed. Counter-jungling will set the other jungler behind and ensure that your lanes won't have too much trouble in the beginning part of the game. Your other lanes won't complain that you haven't ganked their lane if their jungler hasn't been able to gank their lane either.

4. Do I know what champion is jungling on the other team?
If the enemy team has picked a gank reliant jungler a good strategy is to pick an efficient farmer. By clearing jungle minions quicker than the enemy jungler you can revolve around an invade strategy. A jungler that can invade can make a big impact on the game. By taking the enemy jungle you can easily deny them experience needed to have a level and gold advantage. While the enemy is busy trying to kill your teammates you can focus on a war of attrition, giving your team the advantage of gold, experience, and map awareness.

If the enemy team has already picked a farmer for their jungler you can pick a good duelist and try to kill them in their own jungle if you are familiar with typical clear paths. A typical strategy is to use exhaust and kill the enemy while they are killing the red buff (lizard) for an easy first blood.
